Airsoft Optic Mount Heights Explained: Find the Perfect Co-Witness for Your Setup

With so many different optic mounts on the market, it can be hard to know which one fits your airsoft rifle and your style of play. In this guide, we’ll break down the most common optic mount heights, what “co-witness” actually means, and the pros and cons of each setup so you can make an informed decision.

Understanding optic mount measurements

These measurements are taken from the top of your flat-top rail (on an AR-style replica) to the center of your optic lens. Each height affects your sight picture, comfort, and compatibility with accessories like backup iron sights, masks, lasers, and night vision devices.

  • 1.42"Absolute Co-Witness: Your red dot and iron sights align perfectly in the center of your optic.
  • 1.57"Lower 1/3 Co-Witness: Your red dot appears slightly above your iron sights, which sit in the lower third of your optic view.
  • 2.26" — Found on Unity Tactical risers.
  • 2.91" — Found on GBRS Tactical risers.

Comparing optic mount heights

1.42" — Absolute Co-Witness

Pros:

  • Often included with the optic (no need to buy a separate mount).
  • Allows use of backup sights through the optic if your battery dies.
  • Low height over bore minimizes accuracy deviation.
  • Easy to find lens protectors for added protection against incoming BBs.

Cons:

  • Optic sits very low — can be uncomfortable with paintball-style or full-face masks.
  • Laser units may partially block your sight picture.
  • Difficult to use with night vision devices.

1.57" — Lower 1/3 Co-Witness

Pros:

  • Usually included with most red dot optics.
  • Maintains iron sight visibility if the optic fails.
  • Low height over bore keeps accuracy consistent.
  • Compatible with many lens protectors.

Cons:

  • Still sits relatively low for players using masks.
  • Laser units can obscure the optic view.
  • Not ideal for night vision setups.

2.26" — Unity Tactical Riser Height

Pros:

  • More natural, upright head posture reduces neck strain.
  • Perfect for use with paintball masks or face protection.
  • Compatible with night vision devices.
  • Laser units won’t interfere with optic visibility.

Cons:

  • Mount must be purchased separately.
  • Lens protectors are harder to find for this height.
  • Higher height over bore can affect accuracy at longer ranges.
  • Cannot use backup sights if the optic battery dies.

2.91" — GBRS Tactical Riser Height

Pros:

  • Promotes an upright head position and improved comfort.
  • Excellent for paintball-style masks and protective gear.
  • Ideal for night vision users.
  • Unobstructed view even with laser units attached.

Cons:

  • Sold separately from most optics.
  • Limited lens protector options.
  • Higher height over bore may require sight adjustment for accuracy.
  • No co-witness with backup sights if the optic fails.

Which optic mount height is right for you?

If you play close-quarters (CQB) and prioritize fast target acquisition with minimal sight offset, an absolute or lower 1/3 co-witness setup is ideal. If you run a mask, night vision, or laser devices, a taller mount like 2.26" or 2.91" offers better ergonomics and visibility.
