Classic Army MWS vs. Tokyo Marui MWS: Compatibility Test Results (Part 1)

The new Classic Army MWS GBBR claims Tokyo Marui MWS compatibility—but how compatible is it really? Our Airsoft Extreme San Diego techs put both platforms side by side to test receivers, magazines, charging handles, and aftermarket parts. Here are the results.
Classic Army MWS Compatibility Testing: Part 1
Hello airsofters—we hope everyone has been doing well! By now you've probably heard that Classic Army has released their new MWS gas blowback rifle. Since it's a brand-new platform, there isn't much verified information available beyond claims that it's "Tokyo Marui MWS compatible." Our staff at Airsoft Extreme San Diego decided to put those claims to the test. This is the first in a series of blogs where we'll be documenting exactly what parts interchange between the two platforms—and what doesn't.
Receiver Compatibility
The first question everyone asks is: Can you swap uppers and lowers between the Classic Army and Tokyo Marui MWS? We confirmed that a Classic Army upper and Classic Army lower fit together perfectly and cycle without issue. (See Picture 001)
However, when attempting to install a Tokyo Marui upper onto a Classic Army lower, the combination would not fit correctly. The front receiver lug on the Classic Army platform is longer from front to back than the Tokyo Marui design. Because of this extra material, the TM upper cannot fully seat onto the Classic Army lower receiver. (See Picture 002 & Picture 003)
Magazine Compatibility
Good news for existing MWS owners...
Tokyo Marui MWS magazines work perfectly in the Classic Army MWS. (See Picture 001) If you've already invested in a collection of TM MWS magazines, you won't need to replace them when moving to the Classic Army platform.
Aftermarket Upgrade Parts
Another common question is whether aftermarket upgrade parts fit the Classic Army MWS. Our San Diego techs, Lawrence and Joe, installed several aftermarket components from:
- SLONG
- PTS
- GCTac
- Guns Modify
These parts installed into both the Classic Army upper and lower without issue. (See Picture 004, Picture 005, Picture 006 & Picture 007)
Charging Handle Compatibility
We did discover another incompatibility during testing. The Classic Army charging handle will not fit inside a Tokyo Marui upper receiver. The reason is simple: the Classic Army charging handle uses a design that more closely resembles a real AR-15 charging handle, complete with guide rails on both sides. These guides interfere with the internal dimensions of the Tokyo Marui upper, preventing proper installation. (See Picture 008)
Final Thoughts
While the Classic Army MWS shares a great deal of compatibility with the Tokyo Marui MWS platform, our testing shows that not every component is directly interchangeable. As we continue testing additional parts and accessories, we'll be publishing more compatibility reports to help you make informed upgrade decisions.
