MWS : Classic Army vs. Tokyo Marui: Compatibility Test Results (Part 2)

Classic Army MWS Compatibility Testing: Part 2
Welcome back, fellow airsofters, and thank you for joining us for another Airsoft Extreme blog!
Today, we're continuing our testing of just how compatible the Classic Army MWS GBBR is with the Tokyo Marui MWS platform. In Part 2 of our compatibility series, we'll be checking the fitment and function of an aftermarket hop-up chamber, selector switch, and several handguards.
Test #1: Nine Ball MWS Hop-Up Chamber
First on the list is the hop-up unit. For this test, we're using the Nine Ball MWS Custom Hop-Up Chamber for TM GBB M4A1. The hop-up chamber fits nicely into the outer barrel, and the chamber sleeve slips over the assembly snugly without being overly tight. Once everything is installed into the Classic Army upper receiver, the outer barrel seats properly and the hop-up adjustment wheel operates smoothly. (See Picture 009, Picture 010 & Picture 011)
Result: Compatible.
Test #2: PTS Talon Ambidextrous Selector
Next on the chopping block is the selector switch. For this test, we're using the PTS Talon Ambidextrous Selector Switch. We started by assembling the left side of the selector and installing it from left to right. Once that portion was seated correctly, we completed the installation by attaching the right side of the selector. The result? Everything installed and functioned properly. (See Picture 012 & Picture 013)
In fact, our San Diego staff actually prefer the PTS selector over the stock Classic Army selector because of its smoother action when switching between fire modes.
Result: Compatible—and a nice upgrade over the stock selector.
Test #3: Aftermarket Handguards
Now we come to the so-called "elephant in the room." Will aftermarket MWS handguards and rails fit the Classic Army MWS? The answer is... no—and also yes. This is where compatibility gets a little more complicated.
Direct Handguard Installation
Some aftermarket rails will physically fit onto the Classic Army upper receiver, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll lock into place correctly. If you look closely at Picture 015, the shadow visible through the mounting hole is actually part of the barrel nut. This obstruction prevents the handguard's cross bolt from passing completely through, meaning the handguard cannot be properly secured. (See Picture 014 & Picture 015)
Result: Some handguards may fit physically but will not properly lock into place.
Using the PTS Adapter Ring
We also tested the PTS Adapter Ring for TM GBB to see if it would solve the fitment issue. With some handguards, however, the adapter ring pushed the rail too far forward, creating another fitment problem. (See Picture 016, Picture 017, Picture 018 & Picture 019)
But all is not lost. We were able to properly mount several other handguards using the PTS adapter ring, confirming that aftermarket rail compatibility is possible—it simply depends on the specific handguard you're trying to install. (See Picture 020 & Picture 021)
Result: Partially compatible. Fitment varies depending on the handguard and mounting system.
What We've Learned So Far
Our testing continues to show that the Classic Army MWS has a good amount of compatibility with the existing Tokyo Marui MWS aftermarket ecosystem—but "TM MWS compatible" doesn't necessarily mean every component will be a direct drop-in fit. The Nine Ball hop-up chamber and PTS Talon selector installed successfully, while aftermarket handguard compatibility proved to be much more dependent on the individual rail and mounting setup. As our team continues testing additional components, we'll keep documenting our findings in future installments of the Classic Army MWS Compatibility Testing series.
