Why Isn't My Outer Barrel Centered? (Easy Rail Alignment Fix)

If your outer barrel doesn't appear centered inside your handguard, don't panic—it probably isn't bent. In this guide, Airsoft Extreme shows you one of the most common causes of barrel misalignment and how to correct it with just a single Allen wrench.

How to Fix an Off-Center Outer Barrel

Welcome back to another Airsoft Extreme Tech Tip!

Today we'll be discussing what to do if your outer barrel isn't centered inside your handguard. (See Picture 1)

At first glance, you might think your outer barrel is bent—but fortunately, the solution is usually much simpler than that.

The Most Common Cause

Over the years we've noticed that one of the most common causes of an off-center barrel is uneven tension on the bolts that secure the handguard to the free-float barrel nut or adapter. (See Picture 2)

If one side is tightened more than the other, the handguard can actually shift slightly, making the barrel appear off-center.

What You'll Need

  • 5/32" Ball-End Allen Driver

Step 1: Loosen the Rail Bolts

Using your 5/32" ball-end Allen driver, slightly loosen the handguard mounting bolts.

You'll probably notice that simply relieving the tension allows the handguard to naturally center itself around the barrel. (See Picture 3 & Picture 4)

Step 2: Retighten Evenly

Rather than tightening one side completely before the other, tighten the bolts gradually using the following pattern:

  1. Upper Left
  2. Middle Right
  3. Middle Left
  4. Upper Right

(See Picture 5, Picture 6, Picture 7 & Picture 8)

Working in a staggered pattern helps apply even pressure and keeps the handguard properly aligned.

Take Your Time

Avoid overtightening the bolts. Tighten each one gradually until secure while checking the alignment throughout the process.

Small adjustments often make a big difference.

The Result

With the rail properly aligned, your outer barrel should now sit centered within the handguard without requiring any special tools or major disassembly. (See Picture 9)

Still Having Problems?

If your barrel still isn't centered after following these steps, there may be another underlying issue.
